tv   MSNBC Live With Thomas Roberts  MSNBC  October 29, 2015 10:00am-12:01pm PDT

10:00 am
hi, everybody. i'm thomas roberts. welcome to "msnbc live." we continue the breaking news coverage that we have been following out of florida at the airport in fort lauderdale. just take a look at these aerial images coming in to us as we see rescue teams, first responders, on their way there. moments ago, you can see the plane which reported a fire on board of this dynamic international airways, flight 405, apparently it caught fire while taxiing for departure. this was at fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. so an aircraft taxiing behind the boeing 767 reported that fuel was leaking from the aircraft and the fire started before, now, here we see passengers that were safely evacuated from that plane on the left-hand side of your screen. on the right-hand side, you can see the active runway and the situation with first responders, where you also see the emergency exit ramps that had been
10:01 am
deployed with passengers used to get them off that flight safely. but then also, the equipment and the amount of fire, the amount of disperse ant used to get that fire under control. on the left is the image of the passengers getting safely off that flight and closer to the terminal there at fort lauderdale hollywood international. jay blackman is in d.c. and joins us now. explain what you think could have caused this and how this as we are saying was reported because of another flight seeing the issue and the fuel leaking before the fire started. >> i think it's probably a little too early to tell what could cause it. obviously engines and engine rotors are hot so if you've got any fuel leaking on that, any kind of arc or spark is going to create a fire. there seems to be in that video a significant amount of damage
10:02 am
to the fuselage and to the engine. investigators probably from the ntsb will take a look at that and want to know what caused that. this is a charter aircraft, a 767 bound for venezuela and it appears that everybody has gotten off safely. obviously flight crews and pilots trained for this. the airport fire department will drill for things like this. it looks like this ended as well as it could. >> yeah, and again, if people are just joining us, this is the image coming to us out of fort lauderdale international airport. a plane was about to take off, it's from dynamic international, that's the airline, and it caught on fire while taxiing for its departure. apparently it was leaking fuel before the fire started and as we can see from this wider shot, where the char marks are right behind the wing but also there,
10:03 am
you can see what the first responders are looking at as they evaluate any hot spots that might be left inside of this aircraft. but as we understand it, everyone has gotten off safely. that's a closer shot towards the front of the plane. we can see how the emergency slides were used and deployed to safely evacuate everyone off at least from that one location. we don't see it, as you notice, from the back of the aircraft. there was not a safety slide deployed from there to get the passengers off. but here as we have the camera shot being moved around, we are not in control of this camera shot but we can see now passengers and also airport staff that are on site on location that have coordinated right where they took those passengers back in. we can also see ambulances there among the first responders. we don't know of any injuries that are associated with what
10:04 am
happened there. bob hager, long time nbc aviation correspondent, and expert, joins me now. bob, when you look at the damage and how we see where that blaze may have originated on this flight, what does that say to you and especially about in such an early state of the manifest here, about to take off? it was just taxiing? >> yeah. i heard you say a moment ago there was something about a fuel leak, another plane had seen a fuel leak, is that what you said? or what you heard? >> yeah. that there was -- that it was reported that fuel was leaking from the aircraft before the fire started. this was a flight again for people just joining us, was taking off -- >> sure. well, you see all the char marks around the engine on the left there, both at the front of the engine and behind, which absent
10:05 am
the report of the fuel leak, you would think about some kind of uncontained engine breakup on the taxi rollout which reminds me of the british airways plane that had a similar problem in las vegas not too long ago. ordinarily, those engine fires are contained within the engine and the plane is designed on sensing a fire in the engine to put it out inside the engine so the engine is not supposed to break up and allow flame to come outside the engine such as it looks like flame did in this case. the other thing i think worth talking about is the use of the slide there. you know, all these planes to be certified, they go through rehearsal after rehearsal with live bodies inside, packed inside a plane, to certify that you can empty the plane within a certain amount of time. it looks like that all worked well in this case. >> bob, i just want to show everybody, we briefly saw it
10:06 am
while you were speaking just a second ago, but there was a passenger on another flight that happened to be on the runway that was waiting and we see from the images that they put up on social media via twitter the amount of smoke and concern obviously that everybody had when this erupted out of that engine on the left-hand side of this dynamic international aircraft. again -- >> yeah, that's a pretty dramatic picture. sure. >> we only saw one of those slides deployed from the front. what does that say to you about why there wasn't that rear slide deployed? we don't know how many passengers were on board. maybe they didn't feel it was necessary to go all the way to the back to get away. but it seems as if they all evacuated through the front. >> possible. or maybe since there's all that charring in the back, it was the back of the cabin that was filling up with smoke first and so then you would naturally be inclined to go forward. that's all i can think of in that case. >> we are seeing some of the
10:07 am
first responders that are going away. another image coming in right now that shows again, this dramatic scene unfolding at the fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. earlier today, as this flight was taking off, bound for venezuela, the reports are that it had been seen leaking fuel before this fire began. again, we are seeing different vantage points of just the amount of smoke that erupted out of this engine fire. we are still waiting to get confirmation on the exact number of people that were on board this flight but we do have a statement from the faa, who just put out this. dynamic international airways 405 apparently caught fire while taxiing for departure from fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. an aircraft taxiing behind the boeing 767 reported that fuel was leaking from the aircraft before the fire started. passengers evacuated via slides on to the taxiway. they are also asking for those that are concerned to contact local authorities and the
10:08 am
airline about passengers specifically. again, this flight was headed off to venezuela. bob, do you know what would the flight time be? would that roughly be about ten hours? >> boy, got me on that one. one thing i did think of, though, is how fortunate it is that whatever happened in this case, since he's on takeoff roll, apparently, happened before he got off the runway, because seeing that sort of damage there, if he had been in the liftoff phase, this really could have been catastrophic. >> you make such a good point, especially as we find out that this boeing 767, this is information about dynamic and the type of fleet they operate, they operate fleets of boeing 767, about 200 to 300 aircraft. they are wide body twin engine jet airliner capable of carrying between 181 up to 290 passengers. again, these are for regional
10:09 am
and international air service. they have been in operation since 2009. and they say that they are highly staffed by highly trained and experienced professionals that have been with the company since 2009. they are located with their headquarters in greensboro, north carolina. again, these are just some of the first bits of information we are getting about this airline. i think a lot of people might not be familiar with the airline name. again, it's dynamic international airways. we are just becoming aware of it ourselves and what type of operation that they run. >> given the point you made about the flight time to venezuela, and i didn't know it from miami, but it's a long flight. so that also adds to the drama of this occurring on the ground rather than in the air, because it would have taken a lot of --
10:10 am
i mean, you would load a lot of fuel to get down to venezuela so this would be a plane where the fuel tanks are pretty full, making it all the more dangerous if you had the beginnings of a fuel fire and if there's a tank full of fuel, you have a flying bomb there if it's ignited. >> i'm just getting information right now, more specifics about the flight time, hearing that it's not as long as i had originally speculated. it's about four hours roughly from fort lauderdale to venezuela. so not as long as ten hours, as i had thought, but still, a pretty long clip there of four hours that they would need to be in the air. again, fuel was spotted leaking out of the aircraft by another aircraft before that engine or we assume where the fire began in the engine area there, as we see on the wide shot of exactly what the char marks look like. but you see the slide right there. that's the front slide out of this plane.
10:11 am
we don't have an exact number about how many people were on board except the fluid number that this plane could carry anywhere from about 180 people all the way up to 290 people. but we don't have exact details on the passenger flight list about how many passengers and crew members were on board. we also don't have specifics as of yet if anyone was injured or in need of medical assistance once they were able to get off this flight. but again, if you are just joining us, we are watching the images that are coming in to us out of fort lauderdale hollywood international, where a boeing 767 began leaking fuel on its taxi to takeoff on a flight to venezuela. the engine or a part near the engine then caught fire. as we understand it, all the passengers were safely evacuated. jay, explain what goes in now and here's just again that eight-second clip video of someone who put it up on social media, what they saw from their plane about how this fire looked
10:12 am
very ominous on that runway, but where the investigation goes from here as we wait to find out about passengers. >> well, thomas, a couple things to consider. one, with the slides out, all aircraft are required by certification rules to be able to evacuate all the passengers in 90 seconds which with more than 100 or 150 is a tall order, but in this case, it looks like it was quite successful. in most cases, the national transportation safety board will launch a team of investigators to go look at that. they will interview the pilots. they will download the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder to see what information that has. they will likely interview the flight crew that noticed the fuel leak behind it. then the engine will actually be detached from the plane and sent to the engine manufacturer to be taken apart to see if there's any evidence or any clues as to what caused this fire.
10:13 am
the significant fire damage to the wing and to the engine and to the fuselage is also something they are going to want to look at. the ntsb will make recommendations to the faa if they see anything either with the engine, the evacuation or anything that they can learn from to make recommendations that could change the safety measures that are done on any aircraft. anything that they can learn from every accident makes the next flight safer. >> so we are going to wait to find out exactly what happened when we get information about the passengers and if any of them have been transported on to local hospitals there, but we are just finding out more about specifically this airline and also this route from fort lauderdale on to venezuela. they only started service with dynamic airways over the summer. this was after a ten-year hiatus of direct service between fort lauderdale hollywood international and caracas,
10:14 am
venezuela. again, this is something where another plane reported seeing fuel leaking. we can see there an engine or part of that plane somewhere on the left-hand side of it caught fire. the front slide deployed with passengers able to evacuate. we are waiting to find out about all of their conditions to make sure that everyone is safely off board. but as of right now, we are under the assumption that everybody is off and okay but we are going to keep you posted as we get new information right here on msnbc. we will take a quick break. can a business have a mind? a subconscious. a knack for predicting the future. reflexes faster than the speed of thought. can a business have a spirit? can a business have a soul? can a business be...alive?

all right. welcome back. we continue to follow the breaking news that's coming to us out of florida. this is at fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. you're looking at a closer shot right there of dynamic
10:18 am
international airways flight 405. it was on its way from fort lauderdale on its way down to venezuela. we were just looking on the left-hand side, there it's back, these are passengers that are on the tarmac area after getting off of that flight. we can see parents carrying young children, the mom right there carrying what looks like to be a baby and the dad in front of her carrying a young toddler. some people that do have their bags, it seems. there is the slide deployed on the right from the front of this aircraft, boeing 767. i was reported that fuel was leaking from this plane as it was on the taxiway about to take off and then a fire started. you can see if this were -- these are not under our control, but you can see under the wing there the charred engine and right under the name of dynamic, you can see the black marks. here's a reverse shot where we do see two of the deployed -- or
10:19 am
two of the slides deployed from the front and the rear of the aircraft. so earlier we were only able to see one slide on the side of the plane that was experiencing the trauma of that fire and on this side, we see both slides were deployed for evacuation. now, we learned from dynamic that these types of flights can carry from about 180 upwards to 290 people. we don't have an idea of how many people were on board this late morning/early afternoon flight from fort lauderdale on four hours to get to caracas, venezuela. what we do know about dynamic international is that they are a newly lined up airline returning direct service from fort lauderdale to caracas, venezuela. they just began operating these flights over the summertime, in july. now, this is something that we
10:20 am
are getting from a local affiliate in the area saying this was a scheduled departure of 12:30. again, we don't know the cause of the fire. it had been reported from another flight, another plane, that they had seen fuel leaking. one of the more compelling images is actually captured by a passenger on a different flight. he posted that to social media. i don't know if we can cue that back up for everybody, just to show them what he was looking at outside of his window. look at that. so these are what passengers who were in line to take off were able to witness, just how frightening this was. here's another image of what it looked like as first responders were quick to get on scene to try to get a handle on this situation. again, this was during the departure of this flight that was taking off to travel on to venezuela but earlier, we did see the fact that the passengers were out safely. we see three different slides of
10:21 am
the four deployed and we are waiting on word about anyone that needed any type of medical help on site as we know all the first responders as we saw their vehicles were there. we'll have much more of this coverage and also update you on the day in politics after this quick break. surprise!!!!! we heard you got a job as a developer! its official, i work for ge!! what? wow... yeah! okay... guys, i'll be writing a new language for machines so planes, trains, even hospitals can work better. oh! sorry, i was trying to put it away... got it on the cake. so you're going to work on a train? not on a train...on "trains"!

welcome back. i'm thomas roberts. we have a lot to cover. we will go back to that story in florida in just a second. update you on that. but also, it is a big day here because in this hour, we will have an interview with democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. the senator will join me live shortly. we encourage tou stick around for that. first, the republicans. we start with hallie jackson, who is covering marco rubio today, on the heels of a pretty big night last night after the third gop debate hosted by our sister network, cnbc. how are they spinning it today? >> reporter: we are hearing from
10:25 am
the rubio team that they are getting more support now from donors who previously were looking at jeb bush. i just spoke with a top advisor to the campaign who tells me that today it's been like drinking out of a fire hydrant, in the number of phone calls they received. one word that has come up again and again is the word respectful. there's a sense these donors don't want to make it seem like they are piling on jeb bush today after his performance in the debate last night that has been widely criticized for essentially falling flat. a note of caution. naturally supporters of marco rubio will want to tout and talk up the fact that they may be stealing donors away from jeb bush and we are working to nail that down but the fact that the conversation is even happening is a sign of how well rubio did last night. there was that moment he had with jeb bush, an attack on the missed senate votes bush has been telegraphing for awhile now. rubio came in clearly ready for it, clearly fired up and he will get some momentum out of this debate presumably. he hits the campaign trail in iowa tomorrow and saturday. it will be almost a victory lap
10:26 am
for him. the first time that we see him out on the trail. we will be with him for those. thomas? >> hallie jackson, thanks so much. i know you are on the trail covering donald trump, who will be holding a rally. also, chris jansing has been in colorado and she has been covering ben carson. we have joy reid, an msnbc national correspondent, who is joining us from georgia, and then from virginia, we should have politico's steve shepard with us. good to have you all here. joy, let me start with you about what hallie was just reporting and that political haymaker that rubio was able to deliver to an offensive jeb bush. he was going after marco rubio about whether he should resign or not, he needs to show up for work, and hasn't been doing it, and trying to go in for a kill on him, and boy, marco rubio clinched his fist and came become with this haymaker that knocked jeb bush off his heels. what are you hearing about the fact that we have 13 days to go
10:27 am
until the next gop debate, jeb readjusted prior to this one. chuck todd had tweeted that the test for jeb going forward is how he handles this tough moment. do you think he can spin his performance to stay alive? >> reporter: on the one hand, i think for perspective, jeb bush is sitting on about $100 million in his super pac, far out-raising the rubio pac. i think the jeb side would say he has the financials to stay in even though he has been soundly whipped by the media response including the florida press, including a pollster i spoke to in the state that had the same assessment as pretty much everyone else, that jeb bush did poorly. what's interesting is it does show that jeb bush, while he and h rubio are a younger and older version of the same candidate, jeb bush is out of step with modern campaigning. the attack he was using on rubio, this sort of empty chair attack, is sort of the attack that charlie crist used to great success to take down jim davis,
10:28 am
his g gubernatorial opponent in 2006. the idea of not showing up for work resonates inside the state of florida but what the bush side didn't realize is rubio, having had that big editorial saying he should step down in hand was able to prepare and answer and that he already had rehearsed a response to something that the bush campaign had been trying to throw online. i think the bush campaign is obviously flat-footed. what they need to do now is really be on the phone with donors, make sure they don't begin to defect because up until now, bush and rubio have been polling even at about 8%, 9% in most of the polls. rubio has a huge financial deficit with jeb bush, almost all the money, in fact, all the money really that's been spent on ads for rubio in the early states has come from an outside 501c3. >> so one of the people that also came out last night looking really sharp was dr. ben carson. chris jansing has been covering ben carson's campaign and all of
10:29 am
the campaigns, for that matter. i know you spoke with some supporters of ben carson today. i just want to play for everybody a portion of what they had to say. take a listen. >> right now, ben carson is my number one. he just has that calming presence that i would like to see in washington. >> i have known for a long time he was a brilliant man and a man that god has gifted in many ways, and now that america is so sick, we need a doctor. >> amen. >> we need a doctor to heal us. that's all there is to it. >> these are folks that are coming to see ben carson today. they're impressed with his style at this debate but also, talk about the news that ben carson is trying to make about the next debate or as these go forward, how they are trying to change what we all witnessed last night. >> reporter: yeah. this was big news this morning when dr. carson came in very early and said that he had already reached out to other campaigns, that they want to change the way these debates go forward, and in fact, he said look, we're not learning
10:30 am
anything. this is about gotcha questions. we heard that last night in the debate. so i spoke just a few minutes ago with doug watts, the communications director for ben carson. he says they have already been in direct contact with both donald trump and carly fiorina's campaigns but their objective is to get all the campaigns or as they put it, everyone who was on that stage, together and come up with new ideas about questions, about moderators, about length of statement, even about commercials so they are looking at a completely different way to do these debates and to have more control over them. now, you will remember that for the cnbc debate last night, donald trump and ben carson came together and they got them to change the format, opening statements, they got them to change the length of the debate. they are even looking at changing potentially the number of debates. so all of that, they consider to be on the table and the clock is kind of ticking because the next debate is less than two weeks away. one thing i'll say about here at
10:31 am
colorado christian university as we were talking to some of those folks that you saw, they also were a little frustrated at the debate. they thought there was too much talk about the debate itself and not enough about the issues but where i'm standing, it's really kind of the sweet spot for ben carson. it's christians, evangelicals, young families. the kind of people they know they attract from their online fund-raising. having said that, the next step for them as he's been rising in the polls is to broaden that base. that's the real challenge for ben carson. thomas? >> chris, thank you. let's talk to steve while we have a lot of different highlights, certainly donald trump did not hurt himself. ben carson did not hurt himself. we know marco rubio helped himself. who else was a big standout for you? >> i think for me, ted cruz. ted cruz had the first one of those attack the media, attack the moderators moments. >> newt gingrich style. >> yeah. it was relatively early in the debate. he was able to point out the four or five questions preceding the first one posed to him that
10:32 am
they were all sort of gotcha questions, all sort of tinted with a negative tint to them, and he drew huge applause. it was a moment that focus groups and pollsters measured very very positively. look, attacking the media is a tried and true, you mentioned newt gingrich in 2012, a tried and true tactic for particularly republican politicians in these sorts of settings. i think ted cruz really set the table for a pretty good performance from him by doing that early on and being the first to point out that the candidates up there, in particular, but the candidates up there felt the questions weren't quite fair. >> do you think that that was, even though he used organic examples from what was taking place with the questions, do you think that that was something that was a little more stagecraft and he was just waiting for the right opportunity to do it? >> perhaps. look, cnbc did much the same that fox and cnn did in the first two debates. they tried to create points of conflict. they tried to create
10:33 am
head-to-heads between two different candidates where they might be more combative and you know, if you are preparing for these kinds of questions, because you have seen them in the first two debates, and you are getting tired of answering them and your supporters and voters are getting tired of hearing that kind of tone, then you know, it's something that i'm sure he was prepared for. >> it was a very interesting debate to watch, that's for sure. steve, thanks for joining me. i appreciate it very much. chris jansing, thank you. hallie jackson, thanks as well. we want to turn now to the democrats and specifically, vermont senator and presidential candidate bernie sanders, who joins us now. sir, can you hear me? senator, it's thomas roberts in new york. can you hear me? >> i can't hear him. >> senator, how about now? can you hear me now? >> yes. >> excellent. it's good to have you with us. thanks for making time for me. i know we will have a lot to talk about specifically about marijuana, you gave a speech earlier this week that you say you want that off the
10:34 am
government's list of dangerous drugs. you are the first presidential candidate to ever publicly make a statement like that. we are going to speak about why you want to do that in a moment. but first, i need to talk to you about what's taking place on the left and get your reaction to this latest charge from senator hillary clinton and you, when it comes to sexism. take a listen. >> i have been told to stop and i quote, shouting about gun violence. well, first of all, i'm not shouting. it's just when women talk, some people think we're shouting. >> so senator, she appears to be basing this charge off the comment that you made when you were having the gun reform debate and you used the phrase all the shouting in the world, referencing the fact that it won't help what's taking place with gun reform, but now we have this new charge agreeing that you and the campaign is acting sexist based on this quote from
10:35 am
a profile on your campaign and the quote is, look, she would make a great vice president. this is from your campaign manager, jeff weaver, talking to john holman of bloomberg politics, we are willing to give her more credit than obama did, we are willing to consider her for vice president, we will give her serious consideration, we will even interview her. do you feel you are demonstrating sexist language in your campaign and how do you characterize the fact that hillary clinton is being able to utilize that to her benefit and having your campaign manager fall into a trap about it? >> thomas, number one, if you look at my record in the congress, you will find there are very few people who have a stronger pro-woman voting record, including a 100% record as an abortion rights advocate. number two, if you check the record, what you will find is that what secretary clinton is
10:36 am
saying is just not accurate. i have been saying for months, well before that debate, that if we are going to go forward on sensible gun reform, people all over this country are going to have to stop shouting at each other. those people who might want to do away with all guns in america, those people who believe in no gun control at all. that is what i have been saying for months and i think the record will demonstrate that. it had nothing to do with what secretary clinton was suggesting. >> senator, how do you respond, though, to emily's list saying that what your campaign manager said is condescending in reference to secretary clinton being a good vice president potentially someone you will even interview? >> you know, i think that every campaign has statements come out which are inappropriate. that was inappropriate.
10:37 am
and clearly, i have a lot of respect for secretary clinn. but what i would like to do in this campaign, thomas, is talk about some of the major differences of opinion that secretary clinton and i have. it is not negative to be talking about differences of opinion, including issues of criminal justice. what i just said yesterday is that i am extremely distressed that in this country, we have more people in jail than any other country on earth, more than in china, a country four times our size, and we have got to deal with among other things, serious criminal justice reform including reform of our drug laws. i think it is absurd that over the years, millions of people have been arrested for smoking marijuana and when you get a criminal record, this impacts your whole life and it stays with you. and that's why i think we should
10:38 am
remove marijuana from the list of dangerous drugs on the substance control act. states around this country are now voting to legalize the use of marijuana. they should be able to go forward without federal legal impediments. the second issue that's important to me is i believe and i know this is not necessarily a popular position, but i believe the time is now for the united states to join almost every other major western industrialized democracy in saying no to the death penalty. no to the death penalty. we should not be in the company of countries like china, iran and saudi arabia. we all know there are horrific situations of murder in this country. my view is lock those people up, throw away the key, but i think in a world of such violence, such savagery, i just don't
10:39 am
think that the government in this country should be adding to the violence by taking a human life and also, i think many of us understand that a lot of innocent people, often people of color, have been executed who in fact were not guilty of the charges made against them. so i think the united states should join the rest of the western industrialized world and abolish the death penalty. >> these are two big tracks that you are championing and as we talk about where the campaigns stand at least on the left, i know you are coming off tough numbers out of iowa and new hampshire, it's much tighter, but we are seeing hillary clinton jump ahead in iowa. are you not worried about those numbers? 65% to your 24%? >> i would be worried about it if they were accurate. there are good polls and bad polls. i will take the des moines register poll which is the gold standard for polls in iowa which has us seven points behind.
10:40 am
i think the results of those polls are absurd. in fact, i think secretary clinton's campaign made that point as well. bottom line is, look, we started this campaign at 3% or 4% in the polls. we have come a very long way. we have a great ground game in iowa, great ground game in new hampshire. we are developing momentum all over this country. last night we had over 300 college campuses on a digital town meeting with us. we had 1500 young people out in george mason university. we are in the process of getting people involved in politics who in the past have not been involved in politics. and if the democrats are going to do well, in 2016, from the white house on down, we need to rejuvenate the political process. that's what our campaign is doing. but very important to me is reform of criminal justice. i do not want to see lives destroyed again, disproportionately black and latino, for smoking marijuana. that should not be taking place now. we have to change that. i do not want to see the united

states of america be allied with countries like china, iran and saudi arabia in supporting the death penalty. i would rather be allied with western europe and with all of those countries who have abolished the death penalty. >> sir, let's talk about the youth in campuses. last night the university of colorado got a lot of p.r. with the gop debate i want to get your reaction to a couple things from last night. you serve on the senate with marco rubio. a lot has been made about him missing votes according to numbers compiled. you have missed 4% of votes this year. he made, you know, some interesting comments last night in return to jeb bush, but he has missed 47% of his votes. jeb bush was inclined to agree with the "sun sentinel" in their editorial that marco rubio should resign. do you agree with that? should a senator who misses that much time running for president resign? >> thomas, you are asking me questions dealing with campaign

gossip. frankly -- >> it's a fact he's missed 47% of his vote. >> i know that. i know that i have missed very few votes. >> yes. 4%. >> but you know what, let the people of the united states make that decision. i'm going to try to focus, you know, i am trying to do my job as vermont senator. i will miss votes. that's inevitable. but i'm trying to do my job. rubio looks at it from a different perspective. people will have to make that decision. what i am trying to do in this campaign is talk about the most important issues facing the american people and the fact that we have more people in jail than any other major country on earth by far, lives are being destroyed, that is an issue i am going to focus on and i am going to focus on real criminal justice reform. so that we end that international embarrassment of having 2.2 million people in jail and by the way, we are spending $80 billion a year locking people up. those are i think some of the important issues we have got to focus on. >> real quickly before i let you

go, separating fact from gossip, lindsey graham made a joke last night on the debate stage in the early debate about the fact that he feels that you went on your honeymoon to the soviet union and you never returned. did you go on your honeymoon to the soviet union? >> here's the fact. the fact is that i went to establish a sister city program with now an important city in russia which is still in existence today. the purpose of that trip was a sister city. did it take place after my marriage? it did. i went with i believe ten other people from the city of burlington. the purpose was to establish a sister city. i believe in international, i believe that cities should establish relationships with cities and other countries around the world, often countries that we have disagreements with, and that program is existing until today, where kids are coming to

burlington, vermont, our people are going there. it is a fine relationship. i'm proud that i helped establish that. >> do you think that senator graham is trying to imply that you are some type of communist sympathizer? >> yes. yes. that's exactly what he is trying to do. i think that's a little silly, absurd. i think it is absurd and equally absurd that chris christie talks about me trying to raise taxes on 90% of the american people. totally nonsense. what we are trying to do is demand that the wealthiest people and the largest corporations in this country who have seen huge increases in their profits and their individual wealth, that they start paying their fair share of taxes. >> democratic presidential candidate and senator from vermont, bernie sanders, thanks for this time. i do appreciate it. >> thank you, thomas. >> nice to see you. so we are going to move on now and talk about a new wrinkle that has emerged for the chris christie campaign. joining me with more on that, msnbc political correspondent and host, steve kornacki. what have you dug up? >> well, this is just on the heels of what may have been chris christie's best debate

performance last night. newspaper considered the newspaper of record nationally, one with a lot of readers in his home state is just up in the last few minutes, an editorial calling for chris christie to withdraw from the presidential race. basically the argue is that as a presidential candidate, christie has neglected his duties as governor of new jersey, writing the point is that new jersey is in trouble, this is "new york times" editor jal, and the governor is pursuing a presidential run that is turning out to be nothing more than a vanity project. his numbers are in the basement and he is nearly out of campaign cash. this is his moment to go home and use the year left in his term to clean out the barn as speaker john boehner would say. the "new york times" calling on chris christie to withdraw from the republican presidential race. in fairness, we should point out, the "new york times" editori editorially has never been a fan of chris christie. they never endorsed him when he ran for governor in 2009, did
10:46 am
not make any endorsement when he ran in 2013. you have to go back nearly 20 years to find a republican running for state-wide office in new jersey who the "new york times" did endorse. this is a paper on its editorial page that tends to favor the democrats, especially in new jersey. the other thing to keep in mind is last night at that republican debate, how much applause these candidates got when they bashed the media. rubio talking about the mainstream liberal media, getting all sorts of applause. within the republican primary, questionable how much damage the "new york times" saying this would have on chris christie but at the same time, this shines a spotlight on troubles chris christie is having back home while he's been off running for president. he's lost some degree of control of the government in trenton. just last week for the first fi time for the entire time as governor, a veto of his was overrid biden by the republican. that means fellow republicans, members of his party, turned on him to override his veto of a gun control bill.
10:47 am
that's a bad sign for any governor, a sign that chris christie has trouble back home. we will see if this editorial from the "new york times" shines a broader light on those issues that he's facing in trenton. again, the "new york times" this afternoon calling on chris christie to leave the republican presidential race. >> steve kornacki, wow. okay. thank you, sir. appreciate that update. keep us posted if we get any response from the christie team on that. thank you. want to update you on the story we brought you at the top of the hour. we were following this and we will continue to follow this. seven have been hurt, we are getting those first numbers now, after this plane that was taxiing down the runway in fort lauderdale hollywood international, off to venezuela, was leaking fuel and then caught fire. now we have got seven injured, three have been transported. the extent of the injuries currently unknown. again, this was for a 12:30 departure leaving from florida on to caracas, venezuela. we don't know exactly how many passengers were on board. we will be back after this.

venezuela, urlier this summer. dynamics international is a niche airline based out of north carolina. we're finding from our kerry sanders now reporting that the runways at the airport are now closed. all passengers have been evacuated using emergency slides. we see one on the other side of the plane two have been deployed. we can see in the back of the aircraft that the slide was not deployed. that's due to the fire. the fire is completely out. we have first responders on the scene. they'll now have to figure out the exact cause of what started this. but another plane reported they had seen fuel leaking from this aircraft before takeoff before the fire began. we'll continue to follow that story and bring you new information as soon as we get it. but we move to our north and breaking news coming in new hampshire. the sentencing of a prep school graduate owen labry is under

10:55 am
the other reason it captivated national attention was it was difficult. part of the reason the jury ultimately rejected the more serious accounts against him is this young woman who by all accounts went through something terrible, but she made a range of different statements about what happened. this story changed within her account over time. his story, of course, contesting that. so when you look at this as a parent or someone who might be involved, you say, are you ready to lock someone up for however long when aspects of it were hotly contested. >> we talk about the sentencing issue here, we have victim impact statements that will come today. >> that's right. from the family, from the family and also labrie will have a chance to speak as well? >> exactly. they'll both have that chance. the young woman who we are not naming who accused him, will have a chance to speak in open court. he'll have a chance to speak in his defense. we're told that nbc news can confirm according to reporting and lawyers, we'll hear from

plane caught fire on the tarmac. this was a dynamics international airline that was taking off roughly around 12:30 in part to caracas, venezuela. reports it was leaking fuel, then an engine caught fire. this was an image captured by another passenger from a flight that was behind this aircraft on the runway. now we do know there were seven people that were injured, three different emergency slides were deployed from this aircraft. only one wasn't utilized to evacuate people that were on board. as you see here, though, firefighters quickly dousing out the boeing 767 with what looks like a flame retardant. this fuel leak as it was taxiing off for this 12:30 on-time departure for caracas. in an aerial shot, you'll see the damage from the fire on the plane's left engine and right by the left wing.

nbc's kerry sanders joins me on the phone. he's at ft. lauderdale/hollywood international. what are you hearing on the ground there? >> kerry? >> can you hear me? >> we have your audio now. >> reporter: i'm waiting to find out the condition of the passengers that were not injured so they can give us a story of what they saw and what they experienced. we're yet to talk to them. but we do know that more people have been transported to the hospital and are being observed. paramedics rushed to the seen. the broward fire service was here immediately. mike was with them. i saw you just got off the phone. fill me in. >> the latest information is that we transported about 14 people, passengers, to area hospitals. it appears that most of the injuries are not serious. there's one that we call a red, which is potentially serious.
11:02 am
the rest all seem to be less serious. so we're looking at non-life-threatening injuries. we're still evaluating additional patients and there may be more that are transported. it came in as an engine fire on the left engine op the 767. fire crews responded quickly, mitigated the fire. the plane was quickly evacuated. brake fires, engine fires are something we train for all the time. it's not uncommon, as you know. >> i'm curious, and i know this might be a little premature. does it appear that any smoke or fire got into the plane or are the injuries related to the hysteria and jumping on to the chute and coming down? >> that's the question that we're waiting for an answer on. the commander, i've spoken to him. we're trying to determine are the injures from the incident, from the crowd or from the evacuation. hopefully we'll have that answer very soon. >> thank you very much.
11:03 am
greg meyer is standing by to come over and join us. greg's with the airport as well. he can explain a little bit about dynamic air. why don't you come on this side of me. thank you. dynamic air which has been operating here at the airport for about 6 to 8 months. scheduled service but it operates different than most airlines because -- >> it's a charter flight service. they don't work like a normal flight like a delta airlines or someone else here. they have flight schedules, but they have different requirements and that type of thing. they've been here, as you said, six to eight months. they're headed to caracas, venezuela today, taxiing to the north runway when they had engine problem. >> the passengers have been evacuated. the fire is out. it appears to be an immediate response here. the airport itself is a busy airport. i know it's currently closed. do you have to remove everything before the airport reopens? >> no, that aircraft can stay in position because it's on a taxiway. we can continue to operate as an airport. the issue challenging us now is
11:04 am
we have to meet our fire index. we have to have all the firefighters in place back at their station. they're back at their station for the most part, however, we have to refill the trucks with foam. we have to be ready for the next incident. you can't have not met your index. faa has strict standards and we won't operate as an airport until everything is back at 100% and ready to respond. they have a certain amount of time to respond to an incident like this, they did. the firemen responded quickly and the passengers got off the plane. everything worked as planned. >> i know it's a little early to know and to celebrate, but it appears nobody died. it appears that if people were injured it may have been during the evacuation on the chutes rather than on the plane. could it have been a lot worse? >> absolutely. any time you have a fully fueled aircraft taxiing, fire and fuel do not mix at an airport or anywhere for that matter. this could have been much worse. when you see the images, smoke and fire out of an engine, that would frighten anyone.
11:05 am
we train for this. our fire and rescue team, the broward county aviation, we train for things like this every month, every year. so everything worked as planned. you know, again, it's too early to say what the extent of the injuries were. however, locking at what we're looking at and the fact that everyone's on buses going to terminal four, to the family center, is a good sign. >> thank you very much. i appreciate it. as you heard the airport is closed. you understand now why it's taking them some time to get the airport reopened. they have to get the fire trucks repositioned, they used the term indexed. they got to get them filled back up if god forbid another incident like this would happen. they have to be prepared for it. that's faa speak for it's a charter airline meaning it doesn't have a daily flight here. it operates under different rules but still under the faa guidelines and has certain safety standards that it has to meet as does all avs. typically in a situation like this where you have an engine
11:06 am
fire, the national transportation safety board will not send its so-called go team. rather they'll send in some of their engineers to look at the engine, to look at the debris to determine if there was an obvious malfunction here to determine whether there needs to be some sort of new guidelines sent out to other airline mechanics to determine that this could be a problem. but at this point, it appears to be relatively good news in that there was a plane fire, that it was right there on the runway and that all the passengers and all the crew got off. we hope to talk to some of those passengers shortly. >> kerry, let me ask you, do we know how many passengers were on board? i know you got that new figure, 14 transported to area hospitals. >> do we know how many people were on board yet? come on over. we just received word there were 101 people and crew on board the aircraft. among the injure, one patient sustained burn injuries, the rest are other injuries. that's the information from our
11:07 am
command post at broward sheriff, fire, rescue. >> i understand this saul very early, mike. the passengers, especially the one that sustained burn injuries. it's the left wing. is there a chute that came out on the left side of the plane or was it all deployeden o the right side? >> i haven't been around the other side of the plane so i can't see what's deployed. i can't answer that question. but i can find out for you. >> curious did somebody get off on the -- you can tell us. >> from the aerial shots that we have, we have one chute that was deployed from the front on the charred side, two slides were deployed on the safe side, the side that doesn't have the engine issue. >> so he's telling us that there actually were chutes on both sides. possibly people exited the plane on the side of the flame and that's where the one person that may have come into contact with flames exited. >> very well could be. obviously speculation at this point. i'll have to find out from the
11:08 am
emergency commander and everybody doing the investigation. >> 101 people all safely off the plane. some injured, one burned. do you know how many were crew members? >> haven't gotten that breakdown. 14 people were transported and we're evaluating additional people even those in the family lounge that were off of that's plane. >> i should point out, i fly regularly in part because of my job. and as a result of that i very often find myself seated in the emergency row right by the door, and they do make a point of telling people who sit in that position that in the event of an emergency, you will have a responsibility to open the door, do not expect a flight attendant to be there. but the very first thing they tell you to do is to look out the window to make sure it's safe before you open the door. so it's possible that in the chaos or maybe the panic of the moment somebody deployed the chute and people rushed there unaware that there was actually a flame on that wing and they exited that way.
11:09 am
again, it's all very early. we're still trying to determine some of the facts here. >> kerry sanders reporting there at the airport for us. great work. thank you, sir. we're joined on the phone by jay rollins, a former american airlines pilot. he's flown this type of aircraft befo before. have you been able to see the images of this boeing 767? what does it look like to you where this fire may have originated? >> yes, i have seen the images. it appears the left-hand engine is the one in question. you were asking about the chute deployed. there are actually chutes -- there's a chute area over the wings as well. it does not appear that they were deployed. on the left side with the engine problem, the left rear does not appear to be deployed.
11:10 am
but the left forward one, the right forward one and the rear on the right were all opened. those three. >> we can see the forward chute. we just had a close-up of it there. we see now as the camera goes back for a wider shot that the left rear slide was not deployed. then we see the other side, which is the clean side of this flight that was uninjured by any type of fire damage both sides have been deployed. but jay, the reports also are from another aircraft that this was leaking fuel as it was taxiing before the fire started. so explain the dynamic and also the quickness of how something like that can turn into something much like we're witnessing right now so quickly, especially the origination of the fuel leak. how come that wasn't found or determined in any type of proper safety check before departure? >> all right. there's a number of questions there. basically these engines are very
11:11 am
reliable, but of course they have to be fed fuel. and there are fuel lines that are beneath that cowling, that area around the engine that you cannot see. if one of those fuel lines gets loose or under pressure starts spraying fuel, raw fuel into that area, it will definitely light off because it's very hot, needless to say. so depending on where this occurred exactly in the engine, it may or may not set off the fire alarm in the cockpit right away. however, someone taxiing behind is in the best position to see this because all the hot air exhausts out the back. they would see the dripping possibly as it moved forward and then see it light off. and so they likely would have been the first to see it. >> bob hager is also with us. bob, as we're hearing from our kerry sanders right now, they've got both of the runways that are closed there. they're working on getting the
11:12 am
fire crew that they need to have back in place before they can get up and running again for this airport. but from an investigative standpoint and from the myriad of stories that you covered concerning a ining aviation and just like this one, how long before we see this airport back up and running? >> oh, i think they'll have that in a matter of -- at least by tomorrow if not sooner. by cordoning off the area where the plane is. they won't want to move that right away. but in any event, i do think that this will be a fairly rapid investigation. normally, they can take up to a year and then if it's a mystery, it can take much longer than that. in this case, you've got wreckage largely intact there to pore over, you've got a cockpit crew which is alive and able to do interviews about what they saw, they've got the black boxes on the plane itself.
11:13 am
so they'll be easily accessible and can be read out. so there are a number of different avenues that are clear here for -- to provide answers as to what went on here. >> it looks pretty gruesome, but the best of worst options have happened out of this situation. we have no loss of life that we can thankfully report to you. 101 crew members -- 101 passenger and crew were on board this. if you're just joining us, these are images coming out of ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport. a 767 was about to take off from ft. lauderdale in part to caracas, venezuela, a roughly four-hour flight when it was reported that fuel was leaking and the engine caught fire. 14 people have been transported to area hospitals. one is considered serious. my thanks to kerry sanders, also to jay rollins, former american airlines pilot and, of course, the excellent bob hager, retired

in 13 days. a lot of people -- and many expected more of jeb bush from that debate stage last night. can he recover from the poor grades that he's received? >> well, he can recover if he does what he was supposed to do last night. if he does what he was supposed to do in the debate before last night. this has been the story of the year. we keep pushing the timeline back. the bush campaign will get it into gear on this date. then we say a month later, now it's time. this week the crisis started to really kind of congeal because you saw he had disappointed fund-raising news. he started to get passed in fund-raising by the other candidates. they call that donor retreat down there in houston and the bush crew walked away from that saying, yeah, we've got problems. he'll take care of them wednesday night. his problems got worse last night. one of the reasons they got worse, you play that exchange between rubio and bush, there's this establishment lane they've been competing for. rubio has zoomed far, far ahead of bush in that lane to the extent that bush may not be able

11:22 am
it's always one more thing. it wasn't just that moment but that moment kind of crystallized the concern and thele cha eng and the opportunity for marco rubio. he's a candidate not just to the establishment. he can genuinely also appeal to the tea party and conservatives in a way that's acceptable to them. maybe not their first choice, but once the rest of the field consolida consolidates, they'll find rubio acceptable and he doesn't scare the establishment. he can really stitch the two together. >> the first thing asked of all the candidates was about weaknesses. and jeb bush admitted his was lack of patience. he's just seeking the permission to quit? >> i don't think that. he's a competition person to the ultimate degree by all accounts. he still has a lot of money in the bank. he's going to have to slow down his burn rate and do something dramatic to his campaign, there's a new start, a new version like mccain and if he's
